    I have seen video after video with people defending Robinson helicopters. Or for that matter, ANY fully rigid 2-bladed rotor system. But, as the accident record would suggest, even if you mathematically account for the amount of low time, pilots in training, and the ridiculous amount of the things that have sold, they STILL have an accident problem. I'm not an expert, nor am I actually a pilot. I'm am however, a lifelong vehicle operator. I have driven everything from racecars to construction equipment to OTR rigs. I would never step foot in a vehicle where such a deviation could result in the vehicle tearing itself apart. A semi truck for example can analogously go down a hill far too quickly, maybe the driver wasn't paying attention, maybe there was improper signage etc. There are failsafes in place for this scenario. Advanced breaking techniques, runaway truck ramps, and in th case of brake failure automatic spring brake deployment. This stuff has been on trucks, and highways, for almost as long as what we'd call a semi by modern standards has existed. The same goes for ALL heavy vehicles. Motorhomes, buses (this includes city buses, can't be too safe) etc. In the Robinson's case, there is nothing stopping you from killing yourself, or moreover, nothing stopping any number of unforseen circumstances killing you. An unexpected pocket of turbulence could push the nose down. You could sneeze for God's sake. And that may seem far fetched with the weight of the controls etc, but, remember, I've driven vehicle that requires two hands and some serious muscle to operate. I have sneezed and jerked the wheel, even on equipment like that. If you're quick, no harm no fowl in my line of work. I just don't see any reason why any pilot would intentionally push the nose down like that in level flight. It seems to me that there must have been a circumstance where they either thought it was imminently necessary, or they didn't do it on purpose at all. And, as aware as I am that Helicopters are finicky beasts anyway, it would seem that Robinson helicopters, and other 2-bladed rigid rotor systems, have a uniquely dangerous problem. And in the case of other helicopters that suffer from similar issues, they don't seem to be nearly as prevalent. And in the case of the Huey, I can easily see how in combat, a pilot could make such an abrupt, and dangerous movement with intention and force. But, in normal flight, this aircraft is relatively without incident as well. Again, I'm no pilot. But the numbers point to a more serious problem then simply having lesser experienced operators. Especially since you can easily account for that and still see a problem. I'm not even sure why it's such a hot topic online. The numbers clearly show, even whenother factors are accounted for, a higher incident rate, and a much higher incident rate for this issue specifically, than other helicopters. In my view, there seems to be good reason why so many Military and government services upgraded their 2-bladed rigid systems to 4-bladed semi-rigid systems, or flat out replaced those vehicles with semi-rigid vehicles. But, again, I am no expert. This is just what I see from the outside looking in.

    One of the biggest hallmarks of intelligence is empathy. I don't understand either how you could design a helicopter that literally commits suicide under certain flight conditions, but as opposed to morons I attest that my own ignorance, instead of a failed design. If I could talk to the designers I am 100% certain they could explain perfectly well why they designed it this way and why it's a perfectly valid design choice.

    To be honest I find it strange that someone could be in a low G state in the first place, it's logical and I was always taught to reduce power to descend, not to push forward. The only thing that could cause this that I can think of is strong turbulence, so I suppose if I'm every flying an aircraft like this I'll keep it in mind in that situation. Scary stuff though.

    You have to push the cyclic, to induce negative G! Don't the disk tilt to front with fwd cyclic input???

    • @TommyTipex
      @TommyTipex 8 місяців тому

      It does, though just being in a low G state doesn't cause anything catastrophic in and of itse;l, it causes the helicopter to gently roll to the left, and if you just move the cyclic left to stop it rolling then mast bumping can occur and rip the rotor off, or I suppose a violent enough pull back on the cyclic can strike the tail. Your supposed to very gently pull back to load the disk and undo your push over and you'll be alright. Best to just not dump the lever and push forward hard on the stick and hit low g in the first place though.
